As the plodding but inevitable terror of finals dawns on us, people stop doing healthy and meaningful activities like spending time with their loved ones and eating nutritious food to hide out behind walls of textbooks and discarded Strada cups to surf Facebook much, much more than usual.

I know you’re doing it, and I am too, so don’t feel too bad.  Instead, use some of your precious time to look at some interesting rocks I took pictures of at the Grand Canyon. Or maybe go back to studying, slacker:

unexpected pleasures

I got something in the mail today,

a gift from an old friend.

 

The best part was the beautiful, hand-cut ornamentation on the dedication page.  Notice the instantly recognizable silhouette.

It’s a red leather bound travel diary with such sections as “Itinerary” “Hotels Where I’ve Stayed” “Restaurants I Enjoyed” “Notes & Incidents” and a section for me to paste “Ephemera (Ticket stubs, restaurant receipts).”

It will travel many miles with me in the years to come.

This trip is really starting to take off!  I’m in St. George Utah right now, a place where everything closes around two or three o’clock on Sundays.  I’m heading over to Parry Lodge, a hotel in Kanab, UT.  Apparently, lots of movies are filmed in this area (including Arabian Nights, Planet of the Apes (original and remake), and Maverick), and has been lodging for such guests as Frank Sinatra, Clint Eastwood and John Wayne!
